For physically demanding occupations, discuss specific return-to-work timelines with your clinician based on your job requirements and healing progress. The two timelines people confuse
Almost every question about wart healing comes down to conflating two different things.
The first is wound closure. After treatment under local anaesthetic, the treated site closes over at roughly two to three weeks. On the sole this feels slower because you are walking on it; most patients are back in normal footwear at five to seven days and back to sport at around two weeks.
The second is skin settling. New skin over a treated site starts pink and slightly raised, and takes about three months to flatten and match the surrounding tone. This is why we assess results at three months rather than three weeks, and why any before-and-after comparison made at four weeks is looking at the process rather than the outcome.
Aftercare changes the first timeline more than the second. Keeping the wound moist with a plain ointment rather than letting a hard scab form speeds closure and reduces marking; picking at it does the opposite. Sun protection matters for the second, because ultraviolet on new skin is what drives most post-treatment darkening.
Serious scarring is uncommon, under five per cent in our practice. Recurrence sits at around ten to fifteen per cent within twelve months, most of that within the first six months, and after a year it becomes uncommon.
